IRE joins O’level elective subjects amid finance gaps

Islamic Religious Education has been given a place among the elective subjects under Uganda’s new lower secondary curriculum, with school officials saying the subject has adequate learning materials and guidance from the Ministry of Education and Sports.

However, stakeholders say the formal inclusion of the subject in the curriculum does not necessarily translate into effective teaching in all schools, with low enrollment, teacher shortages and financial constraints continuing to affect religious instruction.
