Tanzania’s renowned musician, Zuchu, has recently faced a ban from performing in Zanzibar for a period of six months due to a controversial show that was deemed inappropriate by the authorities. The incident took place during her performance on Kendwa island last month, where she allegedly used sexually explicit language and gestures that were deemed offensive.

According to a report by BBC, the Zanzibar arts council stated that Zuchu’s performance violated the customs, traditions, and culture of the island. In addition to the ban, she was also fined approximately US$390 (£306) for performing without proper registration with the council, as reported by various media outlets. Zuchu, whose birth name is Zuhura Othman Soud, issued an apology in a video posted on her Instagram account, expressing that her intention was to entertain and not to offend anyone.

Zanzibar is a popular tourist destination in Tanzania and has been recognized by numerous travel magazines as one of the top 10 travel destinations in Africa. However, the conservative nature of its residents led to objections when video clips of Zuchu’s controversial performance surfaced on social media platforms. Despite the backlash, the 30-year-old musician has achieved significant success in her career. She is the first female artist in East Africa to garner one million YouTube subscribers within a year and only the fifth female artist on the continent to surpass 500 million YouTube views, as confirmed by her record label, WCB Wasafi.
