Advocate Mudenda also announced changes in the chairpersons of various portfolio committees in the National Assembly. Cde Edmond Mkaratigwa is now the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs while Cde Maggie Govha is now the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development. Cde Mayor Wadyajena was appointed as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, and Cde Tendai Nyabani is now the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.
In the Senate, Advocate Mudenda announced that Cde Alice Chimbudzi is now the chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Sustainable Development Goals while Cde Lillian Timveos was appointed as the chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Human Rights. Cde Siphiwe Ncube is now the chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Indigenization and Empowerment while Cde John Masaba was appointed as the chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Peace and Security.
The Speaker also announced several new appointments to the House of Assembly Service Commission. Cde Lucia Matibenga, Cde Kindness Paradza, Cde Jasmine Tofa, and Cde Nomathemba Ndlovu were appointed as members of the commission.
In a statement, Advocate Mudenda said the appointments were made in terms of the Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.
“The above appointments have been made in terms of the powers vested in the Speaker of the National Assembly and in line with the dictates of the Constitution of Zimbabwe as read with Section 39 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“The appointments of the chairpersons and members to the respective Portfolio Committees and Thematic Committees in the Senate are in terms of Standing Order Number 159 and 138, respectively, of the Senate Standing Rules and Orders,” Advocate Mudenda added.
Advocate Mudenda urged the new appointees to diligently execute their duties and responsibilities in their new roles.
“I have no doubt that the newly appointed members of the House of Assembly Service Commission will bring their wealth of collective knowledge and experience to bear on the commission’s endeavors of enhancing operational efficiency, discipline, and best practices in the House of Assembly Service,” he said.
“I wish to exhort and implore the newly appointed chairpersons of the Portfolio Committees and Thematic Committees to exhibit sterling leadership qualities and steer their respective committees with a singular focus on the national interest, in pursuit of parliamentary democracy and development,” Advocate Mudenda added.
The appointments are important as they help in the smooth running of both the National Assembly and the Senate. The portfolio committees play a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of government policies and holding the executive accountable.
