Traditional leaders in Matabeleland South Province have made a formal request to President Mnangagwa to launch the Gukurahundi community hearings programme in Gwanda. This request was made during the fourth meeting between the President and 72 chiefs from Matabeleland North and South provinces. The traditional leaders expressed their eagerness to promote reconciliation and national unity through the initiative.

The Gukurahundi community hearings programme aims to address the grievances and wounds stemming from the 1980s mass killings in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces. This dark chapter of Zimbabwe’s history continues to affect communities in these regions, and the traditional leaders believe that the community hearings will provide an opportunity for healing and closure.

During the meeting with President Mnangagwa, the chiefs emphasized the importance of addressing the Gukurahundi atrocities in order to move forward as a united nation. They highlighted the need for justice, accountability, and reconciliation to ensure that the wounds of the past are properly addressed and that the affected communities are given a chance to heal.

In addition to their request for the launch of the community hearings programme in Gwanda, the traditional leaders also conveyed their commitment to support the initiative and work towards promoting peace and unity in their respective communities. They expressed their willingness to actively participate in the process and to encourage community members to engage in the hearings.

President Mnangagwa welcomed the traditional leaders’ input and assured them of his commitment to addressing the Gukurahundi issue. He acknowledged the need for healing and reconciliation and pledged to work with the traditional leaders and affected communities to ensure that the community hearings are a success.

The President’s engagement with the traditional leaders reflects his administration’s efforts to confront the unresolved issues of the past and foster national unity. The launch of the Gukurahundi community hearings programme in Gwanda will be a significant step towards acknowledging and addressing the historical injustices and promoting healing and reconciliation in Matabeleland South Province.
