Farmers at Khwalu Irrigation Scheme in ward 11 of Beitbridge district are reeling from significant losses after a herd of elephants rampaged through their maize fields on Tuesday evening. The elephants, which strayed into the area, caused extensive damage to the newly revived irrigation project.

Mr. Masauso Mawocha, the district head of the Agriculture Technical and Extension Services (AGRITEX) in Beitbridge, reported that the elephants destroyed three hectares of maize crops. This incident has had a devastating impact on the local farmers who depend on their crops for sustenance and income.

The Khwalu Irrigation Scheme had recently undergone revitalization efforts to improve its agricultural productivity. The destruction caused by the elephants has dealt a severe blow to the farmers’ hopes of a successful harvest.

In addition to the financial losses incurred, the farmers are also concerned about the potential food shortage that may arise from this devastating event. Maize is a staple crop in the region, and the destruction of such a large portion of the harvest could have long-term repercussions for the community’s food security.

Efforts are being made to address the situation, with local authorities and wildlife officials working together to prevent further elephant incursions. Community members are also being urged to remain vigilant and report any elephant sightings to the relevant authorities.

The farmers at Khwalu Irrigation Scheme are now faced with the daunting task of salvaging what remains of their maize crops and exploring alternative measures to mitigate the impact of the damage caused by the elephants. The hope is that with support and assistance, the farmers will be able to overcome this setback and rebuild their agricultural livelihoods.
