The Oral Cholera Vaccination (OVC) rollout is ready to begin today, with a goal of reaching more than 800,000 people in cholera hotspots across the country. This initial phase of the vaccine rollout is the first step in a larger effort that will ultimately distribute 2.3 million vaccine doses to 29 of the most high-risk areas.

The vaccination campaign is part of a comprehensive strategy to combat cholera, a highly infectious and potentially deadly disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. Cholera is typically spread through contaminated water and food and can lead to severe dehydration and even death if left untreated. Zimbabwe has experienced several cholera outbreaks in recent years, with the most recent outbreak in 2018 claiming over 50 lives and infecting thousands of people.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has prioritized the vaccination of individuals living in the most at-risk areas, including communities with limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The aim is to create a protective barrier against the spread of cholera, ultimately reducing the impact of the disease on vulnerable populations.

The OVC rollout will be carried out in collaboration with various partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). These organizations have played a key role in securing and delivering the vaccine doses, as well as providing technical support and guidance for the implementation of the vaccination campaign.

In addition to the deployment of the vaccine, the Ministry of Health and Child Care is also conducting health education and awareness campaigns to inform communities about the importance of vaccination and the prevention of cholera. This comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of the disease while also providing immediate protection to those most at risk.

As Zimbabwe prepares to kick off the OVC rollout, there is optimism that the vaccination campaign will significantly reduce the burden of cholera in the country and contribute to improved public health outcomes. The government, along with its partners, remains committed to ensuring that the vaccine reaches those who need it most and that communities are empowered to protect themselves against this deadly disease.
