The election of the Bureau Chair at the 42nd meeting of the Committee of Experts (CoM24) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, marked the beginning of a new chapter with Andrew Bvumbe taking over the role from Uganda’s Rebecca Otengo. As the Permanent Secretary of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Finance and Investment Promotion, Bvumbe embraced the agenda and programme of work set out for the gathering.

The Bureau, representing Africa’s five subregions, consists of a chair, three vice-chairs, and a rapporteur, with members being elected at the start of each session on a rotational basis according to subregion. The diversity and representation of the Bureau members are crucial in ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing the continent’s challenges and opportunities.

Zimbabwe’s representation in the Bureau for Southern Africa in 2024 signifies a commitment to regional cooperation and collaboration. Egypt holds the position for North Africa, while Central Africa is in the process of finalizing its nomination for the second Chair. Cote d’Ivoire represents West Africa, with Uganda continuing to serve as the rapporteur, showcasing the unity and shared goals of the African continent.

In his acceptance speech, Bvumbe expressed gratitude for the appointment and acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor in advancing the Bureau’s work. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing action and tangible results to move beyond the theoretical discussions on Africa’s potential. The call for decisive action and effective implementation resonated with delegates, highlighting the need for practical solutions to drive sustainable development across the region.

The role of the Bureau extends beyond symbolic representation to actively steering the agenda and shaping policies that promote inclusive growth and prosperity. With each subregion bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the table, the Bureau serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation aimed at achieving common goals and objectives.

As discussions unfolded at CoM24, the focus shifted towards practical interventions and concrete measures to address pressing issues such as economic resilience, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. The commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment and innovation was underscored, recognizing the role of public-private partnerships in driving economic transformation and job creation.

The dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences among Bureau members and stakeholders highlighted the rich diversity and potential of the African continent. The spirit of collaboration and mutual respect formed the foundation for meaningful dialogue and collective action, reflecting a shared commitment to shaping a better future for all Africans.

In conclusion, the election of the Bureau Chair at CoM24 in Zimbabwe heralded a new chapter in the journey towards sustainable development and inclusive growth in Africa. With a strong focus on action and results, the Bureau is poised to play a pivotal role in driving positive change and unlocking the continent’s vast potential. The collective efforts and shared vision of Bureau members and stakeholders pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for Africa and its people.
