Sylvia Mwashunguti made history at the 2024 Founder Of the Year Awards (FOYA) by winning the Fashionpreneur of The Year Under 30 award. At the age of 27, Sylvia is the owner of Twitikes Fashion Designs, a successful fashion label, and also works as a special effects and beauty makeup artist in the film industry.
The FOYA Southern African awards took place on February 10, 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Sylvia received her first international recognition for her outstanding work in the fashion and film industry.
In an exclusive interview with Zambia Monitor, Sylvia explained that her fashion house specializes in traditional handmade jewelry and creative designs such as redesigning shoes and handbags. She emphasized the use of the Zambian material known as Chitenge, a wrapper which adds a traditional touch to her designs.
Aside from her work in the fashion industry, Sylvia is also a special effects and beauty makeup artist, and she handles costume and wardrobe in film productions. She revealed that her interest in special effects makeup stemmed from watching horror movies and her first experience came when she received positive feedback after posting her work on social media. This feedback motivated her to refine her skills and led to multiple opportunities to work on film productions.
Looking ahead, Sylvia has ambitious plans for her career. She aspires to work on Hollywood movies and become one of the best makeup artists in the world. She also dreams of opening a school for makeup and special effects and establishing a television station focusing on art.
Sylvia’s advice to young artists is to remain determined and never give up, as the journey in the art industry is challenging. She believes that hard work and perseverance will open doors to unlimited opportunities in the field.
The award she received is a testament to her talent and skill, and she plans to continue investing in her abilities to achieve perfection in her craft. She sees the award as a stepping stone to further opportunities in her career.
