ZESA Quashes Tariff Increase Claims
The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has come out to dismiss claims circulating on social media that there has been an increase in electricity tariffs. In an exclusive interview with ZBC News on Tuesday, Dr. George Manyaya, ZESA’s Stakeholder Relations general manager, clarified that the tariffs have not been raised.
Dr. Manyaya stated, “There have been various articles circulating claiming that electricity tariffs have been increased and are now solely in United States dollars. I want to make it clear that there has been no tariff increase. The last adjustment was made back in December 2023.” He further explained that while the tariffs are charged in US dollars, customers have the option to pay using the prevailing bank rate in any currency of their choice.
Moreover, Dr. Manyaya emphasized the importance of using electricity sparingly to conserve energy resources. He highlighted the challenges faced by ZESA, such as the low water levels at Kariba Dam, which affect hydroelectric power generation.
The government is actively working to address electricity shortages, with the expansion project of Hwange Thermal Power Station 7 and 8 set to contribute an additional 600 megawatts to the national grid. This initiative aims to improve power supply reliability and meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.
ZBC News continues to provide updates on developments in the energy sector and encourages consumers to stay informed about the latest news regarding tariffs and power supply.
In conclusion, ZESA is committed to providing reliable electricity services to the people of Zimbabwe. By debunking false claims and promoting energy conservation, the power utility aims to ensure sustainable access to electricity for all citizens. The ongoing efforts to expand power generation capacity demonstrate ZESA’s dedication to meeting the country’s energy needs and fostering economic growth.
As a responsible consumer, it is important to stay informed about electricity tariffs and usage guidelines to contribute to the efficient use of energy resources. By working together with ZESA, we can overcome challenges in the energy sector and build a more sustainable future for Zimbabwe.
Let’s continue to support initiatives that promote energy conservation and sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations. Together, we can ensure a reliable and affordable electricity supply for all. Stay tuned to ZBC News for more updates on ZESA and the energy sector in Zimbabwe.
