ZBC Boss Fired Over Mutsvangwa

The newly-appointed ZBC Board of Directors has taken action by suspending the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Adelaide Chikunguru. This decision was made in response to allegations brought forth by ZBC workers regarding Chikunguru’s management style and decisions that negatively impacted their conditions of service.

In a statement released by the ZBC board, it was revealed that the specific reasons for Chikunguru’s suspension have been communicated to her confidentially. However, these reasons have not been disclosed to the public at this time. As a result of Chikunguru’s suspension, ZBC’s Finance Director, Assael Machakata, has been appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer.

The ZBC workers committee took action by lodging a formal complaint against Chikunguru, along with human resource director Julius Toringepi and corporate secretary Patricia Muchengwa. The workers accused the trio of undermining decisions aimed at improving their welfare, including delays in processing salary increases. It was reported that the trio was deliberately stalling the salary increment processes as a way of thwarting the efforts of the new board led by Helliate Rushwaya.

Chikunguru’s loyalty to the previous board, which was appointed by former Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, was also called into question. The workers claimed that they were owed back pay for several months as outlined in the National Employment Council collective bargaining agreement.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed a new ZBC board chaired by Rushwaya in January to address these issues. Rushwaya, who was a member of the previous board, is the only former member who was retained. The announcement of the new board members, including Advocate Lewis Uriri, Chipo Nheta, Precious Charandura, Charles Munganasa, Henry Mukono, and Naneti Silikuni, was made by Acting Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jonathan Gandari.

The new board was appointed following the expiration of the term of office of the Josaya Tai-led board. The previous ZBC board, chaired by Tai, included members such as Thomas Bvuma, Tsitsi Dangarembizi, Dorothy Mabika, and Reverend Thompson Dube. The new board’s mandate is to address the concerns raised by ZBC workers and to ensure that the company operates in a manner that prioritizes the welfare of its employees.

In conclusion, the suspension of Adelaide Chikunguru as ZBC’s Chief Executive Officer is a significant development that highlights the ongoing internal issues within the organization. The new board, under the leadership of Helliate Rushwaya, has the responsibility to address these challenges and restore confidence in the company among its employees and stakeholders.
