Zambia has been making headlines at the ongoing 2023 All African Games in Accra, Ghana, by increasing its medal count to an impressive total of 15. The results released by the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) show that Team Zambia has secured four gold, five silver, and four bronze medals, propelling Zambia to the 14th spot on the overall medal table at the African Games. These remarkable achievements have been spread across multiple sports disciplines including athletics, boxing, swimming, judo, and taekwondo.
On a memorable Friday at the games, Zambia added two gold medals to its tally. Boxer Patrick Chinyemba clinched a gold after his South African opponent, Lusizi Lubabalo, opted out of the boxing match. The men’s 400m relay team also put in a stellar performance to secure another gold medal for Zambia in the athletics category. Overall, the athletics team contributed three medals to Zambia’s medal haul, including a gold in the men’s final, a silver in the men’s 400m final by Muzala Samukonga, and another silver in the women’s 4×400 relay final.
In the realm of boxing, Zambia shone brightly with a total of seven medals. Patrick Chinyemba and Gerald Kabinda claimed gold in the men’s 51kg and 67kg categories, respectively. Additionally, Mwengo Mwale, Andrew Chilata, and Emmanuel Katema secured silver medals in the men’s 54kg, 60kg, and 63 kg divisions. The swimming events saw Mia Phiri’s outstanding performance, earning her two bronze medals in the 50m women’s backstroke and 50m freestyle races.
Judo also proved to be a fruitful arena for Zambia as Steven Mungandu clinched a gold in the men’s 66kg category, while Simon Zulu added a bronze in the men’s 60kg division. Furthermore, in taekwondo, the under-30 men’s team brought home a bronze medal, demonstrating Zambia’s prowess across a diverse range of sporting disciplines.
