The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) of Zambia is committed to ensuring that the public benefits from properties forfeited due to dubious acquisition. Deputy State Chief Advocate Margaret Chitundu reiterated this sentiment during an inspection of forfeited properties in Lusaka’s State Lodge area, valued at over K9 million. The properties in question belong to Chiyeso, the daughter of former President Edgar Lungu.
Chitundu led a team consisting of officers from the NPA and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to examine the forfeited properties. These properties include two farms with a high-cost house, four chicken runs, and three flats. Chitundu emphasized that these assets, now under state ownership, will be utilized for the benefit of Zambia. They will either be rented out or repurposed as rehabilitation centers for the DEC.
Chali Mbewe-Hambayi, the NPA’s Public Relations Officer, highlighted the institution’s dedication to combating financial crimes. He stressed the importance of preventing individuals involved in criminal activities from profiting from their illicit actions.
The court’s judgment confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) successfully presented a case for the non-conviction-based forfeiture of tainted property. Investigations revealed that Ms. Chiyeso Lungu’s account had no significant transactions until mid-2018 when it started being used as a salary account.
These assets, acquired through illegal means, will now be seized by the state as part of efforts to dismantle criminal networks and ensure that justice is served. The forfeiture of Chiyeso Lungu’s properties demonstrates the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies and the justice system to combat money laundering and hold perpetrators accountable. This action sends a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated, and those engaged in criminal behavior will face severe consequences.
The NPA commended the investigators and prosecutors involved in the case for their diligent work, dedication, and perseverance. Their efforts resulted in a significant milestone in the fight against crime, reflecting the tireless pursuit of justice and the protection of communities from harm. The public was encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals involved in financial crimes.

In conclusion, the NPA’s actions demonstrate a strong commitment to combating financial crimes and holding perpetrators accountable. By forfeiting properties acquired through dubious means, the state sends a clear message that illegal activities will not go unpunished. Through the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement agencies and the justice system, Zambia is taking decisive steps to combat money laundering and ensure that criminals face the consequences of their actions.
