The Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) has sounded the alarm regarding the exposure of unsuspecting members of the public to dog meat, urging for strict measures to be implemented to tackle the illicit trade. VAZ President Malcolm Chiyoba has highlighted the urgent need for stronger laws to regulate the sale of meat intended for public consumption, pointing out gaps in the current legislation.

Dr. Chiyoba emphasized the importance of requiring sellers to present valid meat inspection certificates before selling meat to the public. He also advocated for the revision of outdated legislation such as The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960. Dr. Chiyoba stressed that animals intended for consumption should only be slaughtered at designated facilities under the supervision of veterinary professionals.

Furthermore, Dr. Chiyoba called for the swift enactment of the Animal Welfare Act to update the legal framework and discourage illicit activities. He raised concerns about the potential underground business of dog breeding and warned about the sale of dog meat disguised as other meats to unsuspecting consumers.

Dr. Chiyoba also cautioned about the serious zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted through the consumption of dog meat, including rabies, Trichinella, Cryptosporidium, and other parasites. He emphasized the significant health risks posed by consuming such meat.

Sheila Oparaocha, Vice Chairperson for Lusaka Welfare Society and representative of Zambian Animal Welfare Organizations, echoed Dr. Chiyoba’s concerns. She highlighted the health risks associated with consuming dog meat and condemned the continued sale of unvaccinated dogs to the public. Oparaocha emphasized that this practice is not part of Zambian culture and increases the chances of rabies transmission.

Dr. Oparaocha called on VAZ to provide guidance to professionals in both the government and private sectors to effectively address the issue. She emphasized the interconnectedness between human and animal well-being, urging for collaborative efforts to protect public health and animal welfare.

The Consortium of Animal Welfare Societies in Zambia has also joined the call for action. They stressed the importance of working together to combat the illegal trade of dog meat and to safeguard both humans and animals from the health risks associated with unregulated consumption.

In conclusion, the VAZ and other animal welfare organizations in Zambia are advocating for stricter regulations and the enforcement of laws to prevent the sale of dog meat to the public. They are raising awareness about the health risks associated with consuming such meat and calling for collective efforts to ensure the well-being of both humans and animals. It is crucial for the government and private sectors to work together to address this issue effectively and protect public health.
