Former Government Chief Whip and ex-Member of Parliament for Luanshya, Steve Chungu, has expressed his concerns about the rising prices of mealie meal in Zambia. He attributes this increasing trend to what he perceives as poor economic planning by the United Party for National Development (UPND) government, currently in power.
In a recent telephone interview, Mr. Chungu lamented the UPND government’s apparent disregard for advice coming from other political parties regarding national economic management. He criticized the government for its unwillingness to listen to various stakeholders on how to effectively steer the country in the right direction.
Mr. Chungu highlighted what he sees as a fundamental flaw in the UPND’s economic approach, emphasizing the negative impact of short-term planning on the well-being of Zambian citizens. He believes that the current government’s inadequate planning is causing hardship for ordinary Zambians who are feeling the effects of the economic challenges.
Despite his criticisms, Mr. Chungu encouraged opposition parties to continue offering constructive advice to the UPND administration on governance and economic policy. He believes that constructive criticism and feedback are essential for improving the economic situation in the country.
Specifically, Mr. Chungu criticized the UPND’s management of maize reserves, expressing concern over the decision to sell a significant portion of the national stockpile. He also raised issues with the timing of fertilizer distribution in regions like Luapula Province, where supplies arrived late despite favorable rainfall patterns.
According to Mr. Chungu, the government’s policies, such as the late distribution of fertilizer in regions with adequate rainfall, do not align with the best interests of Zambians. He is concerned that these decisions are negatively impacting the agricultural sector and, by extension, the food security of the country.
In conclusion, Mr. Chungu’s concerns reflect a broader sentiment among critics of the UPND government’s economic policies. There is a growing consensus that better planning and coordination are needed to address the challenges facing Zambia’s economy, particularly in the agricultural sector. As the country grapples with rising mealie meal prices and other economic pressures, it is crucial for the government to listen to feedback from all stakeholders and work towards sustainable solutions that benefit all Zambians.
