The leadership of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Zimbabwe has undergone a shift with the appointment of Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti as rotational Presidents, replacing Nelson Chamisa. Following Chamisa’s departure from the political movement, the party’s National Standing Committee (NSC) made the decision to appoint an Acting President to fill the vacancy left by Chamisa.
The appointment of Ncube and Biti as rotational Presidents comes as a result of the resignation of Nelson Chamisa as President of the party. The NSC has resolved to have the three Vice Presidents take turns serving as Acting President on a 90-day rotation basis until the party goes to an elective congress. According to the party’s records from the May 2019 Gweru Congress, and within the context of the leadership of the party as at 22 January 2022, Professor Welshman Ncube is the most senior of the Vice Presidents. As a result, the NSC has appointed Professor Welshman Ncube as the Acting President for a 90-day period.
The NSC emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and cohesion within the party, especially in light of the uncertainties created by Chamisa’s departure and the delayed appointment of the Acting President. The Acting President has the responsibility of steering the party towards democratic transition and securing a prosperous Zimbabwe. The NSC also highlighted the need for the Acting President to lead a confidence-building process, reassuring party members and stakeholders and engaging with aggrieved individuals or groups to secure consensus for an inclusive and value-driven people’s agenda.
In addition to the appointment of the Acting President, the party will resume duties based on the 2019 structures, marking the beginning of an uninterrupted path to restoring stability and democracy within the party. Party deployees in various positions and public offices have been urged to continue performing their duties for the betterment of the people.
The party’s parliamentary leadership appointments were also addressed, with the party’s Parliamentary Caucus selecting Hon Lynette Karenyi Kore as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, along with other positions that will be communicated to the Speaker of Parliament appropriately.
In light of the challenges faced by the country, including the cholera outbreak and uncontrollable inflation, the party’s deployees in parliament and local government have been encouraged to focus on important issues that will improve the lives of the people.
The announcement concludes with a message from the Acting Communications Secretary, Cllr Jacob Mafume, emphasizing the party’s commitment to addressing the serious problems faced by the people of Zimbabwe.
This latest change in leadership within the opposition CCC reflects the party’s efforts to navigate through a period of transition and maintain focus on addressing the pressing issues facing the country. As the party looks towards an elective congress, the appointment of rotational Presidents and the resumption of duties based on the existing structures are aimed at ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted path towards restoring stability and democracy within the party.
