University of Zimbabwe Professor Itai Muwati met a tragic end at the hands of Madzibaba Ishmael and his followers at a shrine in Nyabira. The family of the late professor claims that he was brutally stoned to death by the cult leader’s followers, with Madzibaba Ishmael himself supervising the attack. It is believed that Professor Muwati was intending to leave the cult before the assault took place.

After the death of Professor Muwati, his family managed to exhume his remains from a shallow grave at the shrine. Postmortem results revealed that he had been poisoned, shedding light on the heinous nature of his demise. The late professor’s nephew, Tichie D. Madiwanashe, expressed his anguish over the brutal attack and vowed to seek justice for his uncle.

According to Madiwanashe, Professor Muwati was not only physically assaulted but also forced to drink a poisonous traditional brew. He accused specific individuals, including James Takavengwa Gwenzi, Rinos Kabunu, and Devlodge Phibion Katsande, of being involved in the attack. He also alleged that Madzibaba Ishmael’s sons benefited from funds diverted from projects initiated by Professor Muwati.

The accused individuals, including Madzibaba Ishmael and seven other leaders from the Johane Masowe, Gore Jena Penyera Nyika sect, were charged with violating the Burial and Cremation Act, as well as contravening the Children’s Act. The charges stem from conducting illegal burials without proper authorization and neglecting the children in their care.

The tragic incident involving Professor Muwati highlights the dangers of being involved with extremist cults and the grave consequences that can result from attempting to leave such groups. The pursuit of justice for his untimely death serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable and seeking closure for the grieving family.

As the case unfolds in the court system, it remains to be seen how justice will be served for Professor Itai Muwati and his family. The harrowing details of his demise serve as a cautionary tale against the dangers of falling victim to manipulation and violence at the hands of cult leaders and their followers. The memory of Professor Muwati will live on, as his loved ones continue to seek justice and closure in the face of such a tragic loss.
