The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), led by Sengezo Tshabangu, is currently embroiled in confusion and chaos over internal positions within the party. This confusion came to light after CCC national spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi announced that Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume is no longer a member of the CCC party. Mkwananzi stated that Mafume was dismissed for associating with the party’s disputed secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu.
The chaos within the CCC is exacerbated by the conflicting reports of internal meetings and appointments. Mafume declared that the CCC faction led by Tshabangu held a meeting in Bulawayo and appointed interim presidents for the party. Welshman Ncube, Tendai Biti, and Lynette Karenyi-Kore were selected as interim presidents, each serving for 90 days before passing the role to the next person, with Ncube assuming the position first. Mafume was elected as the party’s national spokesperson, taking over from Promise Mkwananzi in August 2023.
Additionally, during the meeting, it was decided to reactivate the MDC 2019 congress posts, resulting in Chalton Hwende resuming the position of secretary general. These appointments were intended to be temporary until the party conducts an elective congress to choose permanent leaders.
However, in response to these announcements, Mkwananzi declared that these appointments hold no validity, implying internal factional conflicts within the party.
The party also appears to be in a state of transition following the resignation of the party’s founder and leader, President Advocate Nelson Chamisa. The party’s Citizens National Assembly has resolved to address the leadership vacuum left by Chamisa’s resignation. The undoubted consensus within the party’s membership and progressive leadership is that the President had become a target of a deliberate project sponsored by the parallel state and implemented by a fatigued and positions-hungry group seeking to sustain Zanu PF rule in Zimbabwe.
The internal transitional processes of the party have been entrusted to Senator Jameson Timba, who has been tasked with leading the Administration Bureau of the party. In addition, the party has appointed its Legal and Parliamentary Affairs bureau head, Honourable Agency Gumbo, to lead a commission constituted by Members of Parliament and Councillors to embark on a national fact-finding mission.
The party has emphasized the need for unity and cohesion, asserting that any acts of insubordination, sabotage, and rebellion will not be tolerated and will be met with legal and political processes to ensure struggle discipline.
Furthermore, the party has highlighted its concerns about numerous evictions carried out by the ZANU PF government in various parts of the country. The party has appointed a commission to investigate this issue and inform the party’s response to this growing national concern.
The statement also addressed the issue of party members associating with factions and individuals that have been dismissed from the party, stating that such actions will result in political and legal consequences for those involved.
In conclusion, the CCC is currently grappling with internal turmoil, as conflicting reports and factional conflicts emerge within the party. The party is going through a period of transition following the resignation of its founder and leader, and it is taking steps to address the challenges it is facing in order to move forward cohesively.
