Divine Simbi Ndhlukula, a renowned philanthropist and successful businesswoman, recently unveiled a cutting-edge computer lab and library program in rural Gutu, Zimbabwe. This initiative, situated in her hometown of Makudo Business Center, represents a significant milestone in expanding access to education and technology in the region.

The grand launch event took place on March 23 at the Mbuya Mary Simbi (MMS) Library in Makudo, Gutu. It coincided with SECURICO’s International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 celebration, showcasing their dedication to empowering communities, especially women and girls, through education and technology.

The MMS Library was established in 2021 as a hub of knowledge and learning in the rural Gutu community. Recognizing the importance of narrowing the digital divide, Dr. Divine Simbi Ndhlukula made it her mission to introduce a computer lab within the library premises. This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the district, aims to benefit seven primary and secondary schools by providing students with digital resources and tools for their educational journey.

The development of the MMS Library and Computer Lab Program in rural Gutu was a collaborative effort, with individuals and organizations pooling resources to enhance education and technology access in the region. Dr. Divine’s commitment to this cause was evident during the launch of her book, “Entrepreneurial Success: Insights on Growing Business in a Fluid Economy,” where she pledged proceeds towards realizing her dream of a computer lab for rural learners. Notable figures like Ken Sharpe, Gloria Zvaravanhu, and Emilia Chisango supported this endeavor through hardware investment.

Furthermore, SECURICO played a pivotal role in supporting the infrastructure of the library and covering human resource costs, demonstrating their dedication to fostering a culture of learning and knowledge-sharing in the community. The collective efforts of all involved underline a shared commitment to bridging the digital divide in rural communities.

The lab launch event gathered prominent figures from the public and private sectors, including The Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services-Hon. Dr. Tatenda Mavetera, and The Masvingo Provincial Education Director Shylette Mhike. Their presence, along with representatives from various organizations, highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing the educational challenges faced by underserved communities.

Through insightful speeches by community leaders and advocates for education and technology like Ms. Emilia Chisango and Ms. Elizabeth Magaya, the event emphasized the theme of “Inspire Inclusion” for International Women’s Day 2024, showcasing the power of partnerships in creating a more equitable and digitally literate society.

In her address at the event, Dr. Divine Simbi Ndhlukula articulated her vision for the transformative impact of education and access to knowledge in shaping the future of Gutu’s youth. She emphasized the role of books in expanding horizons and inspiring dreams, drawing from her own experiences of empowerment through reading and learning.

The establishment of the library and computer lab in rural Gutu signifies a step towards a brighter future for the youth in the region, offering them opportunities to explore new worlds and envision a future beyond their immediate surroundings. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and informed society, driven by the power of education and technology.
