Siaya Governor James Orengo has aired his confidence that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party will maintain its unity and strength, even in the face of the imminent departure of its leader Raila Odinga, who is pursuing the Chairmanship position at the African Union Commission (AUC).

Orengo has thrown his support behind Raila’s bid for the AU top job, asserting that the opposition party possesses a solid foundation and is ready to endure, given its longstanding establishment and history. The Governor stated, “Raila has built a political machine and nationwide base and support that cannot disintegrate and ODM will remain a progressive movement and a bastion for freedom, justice democracy, and the rule of law.”

Should Raila succeed in his bid to replace Moussa Faki at the AU, it is expected that the former Prime Minister’s involvement in Kenyan politics will decrease as he would be required to maintain neutrality. However, Orengo has reassured supporters that this should not concern them, emphasizing that Raila will still be able to contribute to Kenyan affairs as a “patriot and citizen.” “I do not doubt that this new role will not exclude Raila’s participation in the affairs of Kenya and all his rights and freedoms have not and will not be suspended,” he said.

Raila announced his candidacy for the top position at the AU on February 15, 2024, with the endorsement of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, setting in motion Kenya’s campaign to lead the continental organization. Governor Orengo underscored that Raila possesses the most suitable qualifications to assume the position of the fifth Chairperson of the top African continental body, citing his exceptional credentials. “On the world stage no better person will advance peace amongst our nation-states, turn our boundaries into bridges of opportunities, and propel Africa’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council,” he said.

The African Union Commission Chairperson elections are scheduled for February 2025. The Chairperson of the AU Commission serves a four-year term, with the potential for one renewal.

As the AU Chairmanship elections draw closer, the focus of Kenya’s political landscape will undoubtedly be on the outcome, the possible impact on Raila’s political career, and the implications for the ODM party. The departure of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures would undoubtedly result in a recalibration of the country’s political dynamics, as well as the power balance within the ruling coalition and opposition parties.

However, Governor Orengo’s confidence in the ODM’s continued strength and unity, along with Raila’s assured participation in Kenyan affairs, even amidst a potential appointment to the AU, provides a degree of assurance amidst the looming uncertainties. Regardless of the outcome of the AU Chairmanship elections, Kenya’s political scene is set for an interesting and defining moment.
