The former ZBC Chief Executive Adelaide Chikunguru has been terminated from her position for her association with former Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa. This decision was made by the newly-appointed ZBC Board on Tuesday. While the reasons for Chikunguru’s suspension have been communicated to her in confidence, they have not been disclosed to the public at this time. In the interim, ZBC’s Finance Director, Assael Machakata, has been appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer.
Chikunguru’s dismissal comes after ZBC workers raised concerns about her leadership, claiming that she made decisions that negatively affected their working conditions. In a letter of complaint addressed to the board chairperson Helliate Rushwaya, the workers committee accused Chikunguru, human resource director Julius Toringepi, and corporate secretary Patricia Muchengwa of disregarding decisions meant to enhance their welfare. They alleged that these executives were deliberately delaying processes to increase workers’ salaries as a way of undermining the new board.
The ZBC workers also claimed that they were owed back pay for the period of October to December 2022, as well as other dues outlined in the National Employment Council collective bargaining agreement for January to March 2023. It was reported that Chikunguru has loyalty to the past board led by Josaya Tayi, which was appointed by Monica Mutsvangwa during her time as Information Minister.
In January of this year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed a new ZBC Board, with Helliate Rushwaya serving as the chairperson. Rushwaya was the only member from the previous board who was retained in this new lineup. The new board also includes members such as Advocate Lewis Uriri, Chipo Nheta, Precious Charandura, Charles Munganasa, Henry Mukono, and Naneti Silikuni.
The appointment of the new board came after the expiration of the Josaya Tai-led board’s term of office. The previous board included members like Thomas Bvuma, Tsitsi Dangarembizi, Dorothy Mabika, Devnanda Popatla, Reverend Thompson Dube, and Brian Mutangandebvu.
This shakeup in ZBC’s leadership reflects ongoing changes within the organization and its governance structure. It remains to be seen how the new board will address the issues raised by ZBC workers and steer the organization in a positive direction moving forward.
