Lumezi Member of Parliament, Munir Zulu, faced a seven-day suspension from Parliament due to gross disorder for disregarding the dress code guidelines. This disciplinary action was announced by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, with the suspension period set to last from February 27th to March 13th, 2024.
According to Ms. Mutti, Mr. Zulu intentionally breached the dress code by wearing a chitenge despite the clear instructions provided to all Parliamentarians regarding appropriate attire for sessions. She highlighted the importance of adhering to the dress code to uphold decorum within the House of Parliament.
The decision to suspend Mr. Zulu was made during a Parliamentary session, during which Ms. Mutti reinforced that he would not be allowed to enter the Parliament building or partake in any Parliamentary activities for the duration of his suspension.
In a related matter, the National Assembly addressed the issue of the Speaker’s directive to prohibit some MPs from wearing Traditional Head Gears as a mark of respect for the upcoming N’cwala Traditional Ceremony. Senior Media Liaison Officer, Nshamba Muzungu, clarified that the Speaker’s actions were in line with parliamentary rules and procedures regarding the dress code.
Mr. Muzungu referenced Standing Order Number 206 of 2021, which specifies acceptable traditional attire in the National Assembly, such as the “Siziba.” He urged the public to refrain from spreading inaccurate information about Parliamentary proceedings, emphasizing that such actions are considered contemptuous.
Moreover, Mr. Muzungu reiterated that the National Assembly welcomes all stakeholders interested in familiarizing themselves with its rules and procedures. He stressed the importance of accurately representing Parliamentary affairs by all parties involved in order to maintain transparency and credibility.
In conclusion, the suspension of Munir Zulu and the clarification regarding the dress code guidelines and Traditional Head Gears in Parliament underscore the significance of upholding rules and decorum within the National Assembly. It serves as a reminder to all members of Parliament and stakeholders to adhere to established protocols and procedures to ensure the smooth functioning of the legislative body.
