Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds caused significant damage in Midlands province, specifically at Gweru Provincial Hospital. The recently commissioned Centre of Excellence at the hospital had part of its roof blown away, and several vehicles were destroyed by falling trees. Despite this unfortunate incident, Midlands Provincial Medical Director Dr. Mary Muchekeza reassured the public that normal services would continue uninterrupted.

Dr. Muchekeza explained that the hospital experienced an extensive hailstorm that caused some trees to fall onto the buildings. The damaged building houses a center for excellence for patients being treated for HIV and AIDS using antiretroviral therapy. However, the preliminary assessment by the team showed that the damage was not extensive and would not disrupt service delivery. The community was encouraged to continue coming to Gweru Provincial Hospital for their medical needs.

The government urged the local authority to cut down trees that have outlived their lifespan to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, they pledged support for rehabilitating the damaged building. Mr. Charltone Murove, the Provincial Civil Protection Unit chairperson, emphasized the importance of trimming tall trees, planting new trees, and collaborating with the forestry commission to ensure a green and safe environment for all residents. He also advised private property owners to trim or cut down old trees to prevent damage during hailstorms.

Over the weekend, the country experienced hailstorms that resulted in property damage and a tragic incident in Harare. A building collapsed, causing one fatality, injuring six individuals, and damaging property. These extreme weather events serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and maintenance to mitigate risks and protect lives and property.

Despite the challenges faced by Midlands province and other areas affected by the recent storms, the community’s resilience and dedication to rebuilding and restoring damaged infrastructure are commendable. The government’s commitment to supporting rehabilitation efforts and implementing preventive measures will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.

In conclusion, while natural disasters like hailstorms can cause significant damage and disruption, proactive measures such as tree trimming, plantation, and infrastructure maintenance can help mitigate these risks. The collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and communities is essential in building a more resilient and prepared society to face future challenges effectively. Let us learn from these experiences and work together to create a safer, more sustainable environment for all.
