The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party has announced the dismissal of Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, as declared by CCC national spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi. Mafume’s dismissal is a result of his association with the party’s disputed secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu. This decision comes after Mafume made a public declaration regarding a meeting held by the CCC faction led by Tshabangu in Bulawayo, during which interim presidents for the party were appointed.
The interim presidents appointed during this meeting were Welshman Ncube, Tendai Biti, and Lynette Karenyi-Kore. Each of these interim leaders is set to serve for a period of 90 days before passing on the role to the next person, with Ncube being the first to assume the position. Mafume, who was elected as the party’s national spokesperson in August 2023, expressed the temporary nature of these appointments, stating that they will remain until the party conducts an elective congress to choose permanent leaders.
Furthermore, during the same meeting, it was decided to reactivate the MDC 2019 congress posts, resulting in Chalton Hwende resuming the position of secretary general. Mafume emphasized that these appointments are provisional and that a democratic process will be followed to select permanent leaders, highlighting the internal factional conflicts within the party.
In light of these developments, Mkwananzi, still identifying himself as the CCC spokesperson, declared that the appointments made during the meeting and the decisions taken hold no validity, further indicating internal factional issues within the party.
Mkwananzi explained the resignation of the party’s founder and leader, President Advocate Nelson Chamisa, and the outcome of the Citizens National Assembly’s resolution to address the leadership vacuum. It was asserted that President Chamisa had become a target of a deliberate project sponsored by the parallel state, leading to his resignation, which is aimed at strengthening the fight for democratic transition in Zimbabwe.
The party’s CNA has resolved that CCC and its deployees (MPs and Councillors) remain committed to the transitional process that will deliver a New Great Zimbabwe led by Adv. Nelson Chamisa. The internal transitional processes of the party are being managed by Senator Jameson Timba, who leads the party’s Administration Bureau with representation from all ten provinces in Zimbabwe.
Moreover, in response to growing national concerns such as numerous evictions carried out by the ZANU PF government, the party has appointed Honourable Agency Gumbo to head a commission constituted by Members of Parliament and Councillors to embark on a national fact-finding mission to inform the party’s response.
Mkwananzi also emphasized that any leaders or deployees of CCC associating with Mafume’s actions will automatically cease to be members of the party, with relevant political and legal consequences ensuing. In addition, the party has appointed a team to inform its base on the state of affairs in the democratic alternative, dispelling notions of a rift or lack of consensus in the party’s internal transitional process.
Finally, Mkwananzi signed off the statement with “Promise Mkwananzi – National Spokesperson – ONE PEOPLE ONE NATION ONE VISION”.
