Harare City Council is taking bold steps towards urban development by proposing the demolition of certain buildings within the city’s central business district (CBD). This decision follows the council’s ultimatum to property owners and occupants to renovate their buildings within 14 days, or face possible demolition. The council aims to enforce stricter regulations to promote a clean and safe urban environment.
Town Clerk, Engineer Hosiah Chisango, highlighted the deteriorating state of some CBD buildings, where multiple businesses operate under one roof in inadequate facilities. The council is seeking government support to release a Statutory Instrument that would empower them to withdraw building licenses from non-compliant property owners. Failure to meet the council’s standards could result in the revocation of trading licenses or building closures.
The council’s focus is on buildings located along major city roads like Robert Mugabe Road, Jason Moyo Avenue, and Samora Machel Avenue, where heavy pedestrian and vendor traffic pose safety and health hazards. Inspections are being carried out in collaboration with the police to address overcrowding and street vending issues. Property owners have been given the opportunity to submit improvement plans to meet the required standards.
The goal of this initiative is not only to enhance the structural and visual appeal of the CBD but also to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors. The council’s actions are part of a larger effort to transform the cityscape of Harare’s central district. By targeting dilapidated buildings and addressing overcrowding and street vending, they aim to create a more organized and secure urban environment.
The success of this urban renewal project will depend on the government’s response to the council’s request for additional enforcement powers. If granted, the council will have the authority to enforce building standards more rigorously and reshape the city’s landscape for the better. This initiative demonstrates the council’s commitment to improving the quality of life in Harare and creating a more vibrant and sustainable urban environment for all.
