Four soldiers, along with five other suspects, faced five counts of armed robbery in front of the Harare Magistrates’ Court on April 16. The suspects, identified as Innocent Chawaguta (37), Tafadzwa Chirinda Charute (36), Owen Mbayi (37), Promise Mussa (36), Tapiwa Chigwaze (39), Winston Matizanadzo (46), Kamuriwo Mudziwaona (39), Farai Chauke (38), and Simbarashe Vhazhure (33), were accused of various armed robberies in the area.
One of the incidents involved the gang robbing J and P Security Offices in Eastlea on May 16, 2022, where they managed to get away with $142,995 in cash, only recovering $4,900. They also allegedly robbed a complainant in Ruwa on February 25, 2024, stealing $4,952, with only $1,500 being recovered. These acts continued with the gang robbing a security guard at a service station on March 11, 2024, taking $600 and recovering $400.
Additionally, on March 27, 2024, the gang targeted another service station, stealing $1,200 from the safe. On April 13, 2024, the accused persons reportedly robbed another complainant at her house, taking property valued at $2,350, with $600 being recovered. Notably, among the stolen items was an iPad with a tracker that ultimately led to the arrest of the first accused person and the subsequent involvement of the other suspects.
The case was adjourned until May 2, 2024, with the accused individuals planning to apply for bail at the High Court. These allegations shed light on the disturbing reality of armed robberies committed by individuals, including those in authoritative roles such as serving and retired military members.
