The National Ex-Miners and Allied Workers Association of Zambia have expressed their appreciation for the UPND government’s involvement in unlocking the Mopani Copper Mines. Lucky Zulu, the Acting President of the association, conveyed their heartfelt gratitude for what he described as a significant advancement, bringing relief, hope, and fresh air to the enthusiastic ex-miners who are eagerly anticipating positive changes.

Zulu highlighted the association’s active engagement in discussions with both Mopani management and government officials to prioritize the re-employment of ex-miners. This effort is in response to the substantial investment of $1.1 billion USD by International Resources Holdings in the mines, signaling a momentous shift in the industry.

In an interview with ZNBC News, Zulu emphasized the importance of this development in revitalizing the livelihoods of ex-miners who have been waiting for such positive initiatives. Additionally, Musa Kamfimbwa, President of Emerald Production Watch of Zambia, echoed similar sentiments, praising President Hichilema for his role in unlocking the Mopani Copper Mines and attracting significant investment into the sector.

Kamfimbwa stressed the need for prompt action in creating a roadmap to revive Emerald Mining in Lufwanyama District. He emphasized the potential for the joint investment between ZCCM–IH and International Resources Holdings at Mopani to generate substantial business opportunities and employment for Zambians.

President Hichilema recently unveiled Mopani Copper Mines’ new Strategic Partner, International Resource Holdings. During the unveiling ceremony in Kitwe, President Hichilema expressed that this partnership signifies a new era for Mopani Copper Mines and is a result of meticulously negotiated terms that promote mutual respect and equitable benefits.

He outlined the importance of Mopani as a critical asset for Zambia’s economic prosperity, emphasizing that it should be seen as a source of growth and opportunity rather than a burden. The partnership with IRH is expected to breathe new life into mining hubs like Kitwe and Mufulira, with a projected increase in copper production from 65,000 metric tonnes to 230,000 metric tonnes.

President Hichilema reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the partnership benefits all stakeholders by enhancing production, creating job opportunities, strengthening job security, and boosting business prospects. The $1.1 billion investment from IRH represents a significant milestone, with more investments expected from the UAE in green energy and other sectors.

To further support local suppliers, Mopani has initiated a Supplier Development Program aimed at enhancing the capacity of Zambian suppliers by providing access to capital and business development services. President Hichilema urged Zambian businesses to take inspiration from UAE counterparts who have transformed their economy through astute management of their resources.

The reduction of Mopani’s debt under the UPND administration showcases a commitment to financial stability and responsible management. Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe stated that the challenges in the mining sector are being addressed, signaling a positive turnaround for the country.

The partnership with IRH has received widespread support from various stakeholders, with Ali Rashid, CEO of IHR, expressing optimism about the opportunities ahead at Mopani and the positive impact the partnership will have on the local economy. Local leaders and associations have also voiced hope for increased opportunities for Zambian businesses and workers.

As Mopani embarks on this new chapter with IRH, the commitment to a decent work agenda and meeting production targets has been emphasized by stakeholders. Overall, there is a sense of renewed optimism and expectation for the future of Mopani Copper Mines under this new partnership.
