The Permanent Secretary of Administration for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Maambo Hamaundu, recently addressed a group of Public Relations (PR) and Communication practitioners in Zambia, urging them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct to enhance the credibility and public confidence in their organizations. He emphasized the importance of ethical behavior, transparency, honesty, and integrity in communication practices during a two-day Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Training on Ethics and Professional Responsibility in PR held at Legacy Resort in Lusaka on February 16, 2024.

More than 70 PR and Communication Specialists from across Zambia attended the training, which was hosted by the Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC) in partnership with the University of Zambia (UNZA). Mr. Hamaundu stressed that in today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, ethical conduct is crucial as information spreads rapidly across various channels. He urged the practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct for the betterment of society and the nation.

Moreover, Mr. Hamaundu emphasized the importance of PR practitioners in local authorities disseminating accurate and balanced information to the public, as they are the ears and faces of different institutions in the country. He highlighted that effective communication serves as a catalyst for social cohesion, economic growth, and good governance, playing a pivotal role in engaging citizens, fostering community participation, and promoting sustainable development initiatives.

The Vice President of ZIPRC, Mwiika Malindima, reiterated the significance of the training in enhancing the standards of the profession, emphasizing ethics and professional responsibility as key pillars of the PR and Communication profession. He expressed gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Zambia for its support to ZIPRC and its commitment to advancing the field. Nimon Muleya, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of ZIPRC, also thanked facilitators and attendees for supporting the first CPD.

Mr. Hamaundu’s appeal for ethical conduct and professionalism in PR and Communication practices addresses a critical need in the industry. Ensuring that practitioners uphold these standards is essential for building trust with employers, clients, colleagues, and the public. By emphasizing integrity and transparency, Mr. Hamaundu is sending a clear message about the importance of ethical behavior in communication activities, especially in a rapidly evolving digital age.

The training provided an opportunity for PR and Communication specialists to enhance their understanding of ethical conduct and professional responsibility, furthering their capacity to contribute positively to their organizations and society at large. It also indicates the commitment of professional bodies and educational institutions in Zambia to support the development and enhancement of the PR and Communication profession, aligning with international standards and best practices.

In conclusion, Mr. Hamaundu’s appeal and the CPD training underline the recognition of the vital role that PR and Communication practitioners play in shaping public perceptions, fostering community engagement, and contributing to sustainable development. Upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct in the industry is not just a matter of individual responsibility, but also a fundamental necessity for the betterment of society and the nation as a whole.
