Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart has shed light on the internal dynamics of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, exposing the actions of former MDC and PDP members who have taken control of the party. Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti, leaders of the MDC and PDP respectively, inserted themselves as rotating presidents of the CCC, overshadowing Nelson Chamisa.

The revelation by Coltart follows assertions made by Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume, who identified Coltart as the party’s Treasurer-General. However, Coltart clarified that he had relinquished the Treasurer-General position long ago. In response to a query about his role in the party, Coltart stated, “That is news to me. I ceased being Treasurer General ages ago. As I wrote in my statement recently I refuse to be drawn into any zero-sum game. The future of Zimbabwe depends on all genuine democrats finding each other and working jointly to defeat tyranny.”

Journalist and government critic Hopewell Chin’ono emphasized the importance of opposition political activists resolving their differences and collaborating. He commended Coltart for his mature approach in advising against internal conflicts within the opposition. Chin’ono highlighted the detrimental impact of infighting, stating that it ultimately benefits ZANU-PF, the ruling party.

Coltart is part of the cohort of CCC elected representatives who chose to remain steadfast in their positions following Chamisa’s departure from the party last month. The resistance to pressure to resign underscores a commitment to the party’s values and objectives.

The rift within the CCC raises questions about the leadership structure and the motivations behind certain individuals’ actions. Coltart’s transparency in addressing his role within the party serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and collaboration among opposition forces. By prioritizing the collective goal of challenging the current regime’s corrupt rule, Coltart advocates for a strategic and unified approach to opposition politics.

As tensions and divisions persist within the opposition ranks, Coltart’s stance on avoiding destructive internal conflicts serves as a beacon of wisdom and foresight. His call for genuine democrats to unite against tyranny resonates with the broader goal of challenging the status quo and bringing about positive change in Zimbabwe.

In conclusion, Coltart’s revelations shed light on the power dynamics within the CCC and the need for a cohesive and strategic approach to opposition politics. By emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration, Coltart sets an example for opposition activists to prioritize the common goal of challenging authoritarian rule and working towards a brighter future for Zimbabwe.
