The tragic incident of two children being electrocuted in their sleep in Kuwadzana suburb of Harare has left the community in shock. The two children, Junior Makwindi (4) and Tinotenda Tineyi Maketo (6), were buried at Mbudzi Cemetery, leaving their family and community devastated and struggling to come to terms with the heartbreaking event.

According to Faith Makwindi, an aunt to the deceased, the morning started like any other day for the Makwindi family. She described the harrowing moment when she discovered the children’s lifeless bodies. The children were sleeping in the dining room when the incident occurred. Faith Makwindi recounted how she woke up early to do the dishes outside and sent one of the children to wake the others for school. When the child attempted to wake Junior, he felt an electrical current and immediately dropped him, rushing to get help. Despite her efforts to revive them, the children were unresponsive, and it was only upon taking them to the clinic that it was confirmed that they had tragically passed away.

Their grandfather, Mr. Ignatius Makwindi, who was at work when the incident happened, expressed his disbelief and confusion regarding the circumstances of their deaths. He mentioned that the refrigerator involved was still new, and the family is awaiting further investigation from the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) to understand how the electrocution occurred.

The loss of the two innocent lives has left the family shattered, with the realization that the children will never have the opportunity to reach their full potential and their laughter will no longer fill the family home.

The community and family are grappling with an overwhelming sense of grief and loss as they mourn the untimely deaths of the young children. The tragedy has shocked and saddened everyone in the Kuwadzana suburb.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of electrical safety and the need for thorough examination and maintenance of electrical appliances to prevent such tragic accidents from occurring in the future. As the community and family mourn the loss of Junior and Tinotenda, their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
