Luanshya Mayor, Charles Mulenga, recently delivered a powerful message to women in Zambia during the International Women’s Day celebrations in Luanshya. He stressed the importance of women changing their attitudes towards each other in order to stay relevant to national development. Mulenga expressed concern over the negative attitudes women often have towards one another, noting that this can have a detrimental impact on progress and growth.

According to Mulenga, when women learn to support and uplift each other, it becomes easier for men to also assist in their individual development. He emphasized the need for women to come together and support one another, highlighting the significant role they play in contributing to the economic development of the country. Mulenga called on authorities, such as parliamentarians, to consider providing more economic support to women through programs like the Constitution Development Fund (CDF) in order to accelerate national development.

The Mayor disclosed that the Luanshya Municipal Council is actively collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure that women are not left behind in the journey towards national development. He mentioned that the council has established centers within the district where women are being equipped with skills such as cookery, tailoring, and designing to empower them economically.

Meanwhile, Joel Chibuye, the Roan Independent Member of Parliament, echoed Mulenga’s sentiments by emphasizing the crucial role women play in national development. Chibuye revealed that efforts are being made by parliamentarians to promote gender equality within the National Assembly. However, he acknowledged that there is currently only a 16 percent representation of women in the Assembly, which he deemed insufficient. Chibuye declared their commitment to striving for at least a 30 percent representation of women in the National Assembly to ensure more inclusivity and diversity.

In conclusion, Mulenga and Chibuye’s messages underscore the importance of women supporting each other and working together towards national development. By changing their attitudes and ensuring gender equality in all sectors, including politics and economic empowerment, women in Zambia can contribute significantly to the progress and prosperity of the country. It is imperative for both men and women, as well as government and non-governmental organizations, to collaborate and support initiatives that uplift and empower women for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
