Former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa has found himself embroiled in a legal battle with Sengezo Tshabangu over the ownership of the party’s properties. The dispute began when Tshabangu, posing as the interim CCC Secretary General, filed an urgent court application in early February to reclaim the party’s provincial offices in Bulawayo, which he alleges were seized by Chamisa’s supporters after his resignation on 25th January 2024.
Chamisa, who resigned from CCC on the same day, responded by deposing an opposing affidavit at the Bulawayo High Court on 27th February 2024. In his affidavit, Chamisa denied all allegations made by Tshabangu, stating that he had no involvement in the takeover of the party’s offices in Bulawayo. He clarified that he has no presence in Bulawayo and that he has not directed anyone to seize the party’s properties.
Furthermore, Chamisa emphasized that he has no affiliation with any political organization or movement since his resignation as the leader of CCC. He expressed frustration at the misuse of his name and image by individuals claiming to support him, including in the logo of the Citizens Coalition for Change. Chamisa denounced the allegations as a ploy by Tshabangu to gain political relevance and drag him into a baseless legal dispute.
Chamisa labeled the court application as a nuisance and frivolity, asserting that it is an abuse of the legal system to further Tshabangu’s political agenda. He demanded that Tshabangu be held accountable for the costs incurred in defending himself against the baseless accusations. Chamisa sought the dismissal of the application and requested that Tshabangu bear the legal costs on the scale of a legal practitioner and client.
The ongoing legal battle between Chamisa and Tshabangu highlights the internal turmoil within CCC following Chamisa’s resignation. While Chamisa has remained silent on his future plans, key allies such as Amos Chibaya, Gift Siziba, and Prince Dubeko Sibanda have continued to show support for him through mini-rallies and public statements. The dispute over the party’s properties in Bulawayo underscores the challenges faced by CCC in navigating leadership transitions and maintaining party unity.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen how the dispute between Chamisa and Tshabangu will impact the future of CCC and the broader political landscape in Zimbabwe. Chamisa’s strong defense against the allegations reflects his determination to clear his name and disassociate himself from the ongoing controversy. The outcome of the court case will likely have significant implications for the leadership and stability of CCC moving forward.
