Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Misheck Mugadza has stirred controversy by threatening villagers with unspecified action if they fail to attend this year’s Uhuru celebration in Buhera. The event, which will be graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is set to take place at Murambinda’s growth point next month in honor of Independence Day.

Mugadza’s warning came during a national prayer day at Murambinda growth point, where various church denominations had gathered in preparation for the upcoming Independence Day Celebrations. Zanu PF national chairperson, Oppah Muchinguri, was the guest of honor at the event. Murambinda growth point, known for poverty and underdevelopment, will be the venue for the festivities, with Mnangagwa as the guest of honor.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Zim@44: Unity, Peace and Development Towards Vision 2030.” Mugadza’s strong statement emphasized the importance of attendance, declaring, “During the Independence Day Celebrations, no one should be seen at home. If you are seen at home, you are a thief.” This has raised concerns that villagers and residents in Murambinda may be coerced into attending, as national events increasingly resemble impromptu Zanu PF rallies.

During a previous youth day celebration in Masvingo, Mnangagwa used the platform to rally support for himself beyond 2028, which is restricted by the country’s Constitution. Any attempt to extend his term would likely require a referendum. Mugadza praised the churches for their support of Mnangagwa and expressed optimism about the turnout for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.

Buhera North legislator, Phillip Guyo, estimated that thousands of villagers would attend the event. The government has instructed local authorities in Manicaland to focus on rehabilitation works and road maintenance in Buhera district to ensure a smooth experience for the Zanu PF officials visiting the area. The Murambinda and Birchnough Bridge growth point road, spanning 120 kilometers, is currently under reconstruction, marking a significant improvement for the neglected region.

There have also been reports of Zanu PF soliciting donations from companies in Manicaland to fund the Independence Day celebrations. Some companies have confirmed being approached for fuel and cash donations to accommodate the expected crowd at the event. Zanu PF officials have defended the fundraising efforts, stating that it is a national event and not political in nature. However, there have been instances of officials exploiting such events for personal gain by misleading potential donors.

In preparation for the celebrations, Zanu PF has reached out to churches, particularly Apostolic sects, to mobilize their members to attend the event. Despite the controversy surrounding the event, the Independence Day celebrations at Murambinda are a significant occasion for the community, providing a rare opportunity for government intervention and community development in a marginalized area.
