The Great Zimbabwe University registrar general, Dr. Sinikiwe Gwatidzo, who previously served as a board member at the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ), is facing accusations of mismanagement and favoritism that have resulted in the institution’s decline. A group of professors, including some who teach at the university, have expressed their dissatisfaction with her leadership style, leading to numerous resignations.
In October 2023, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Zvogbo, took a leave of absence, allowing Dr. Sinikiwe to assert her authority and consolidate power within the organization. Currently, there is only one Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Professor Moses John Chimbari from South Africa, who has been recognized for his effective work by many lecturers. It is alleged that Dr. Sinikiwe exploits the vacant second Pro Vice Chancellor position to appoint individuals of her choosing, regardless of their qualifications, to maintain her hold on power.
In defiance of the standards set by the amendment of State Universities Statutes Bill in 2022, Dr. Sinikiwe has been accused of disregarding governance principles and creating turmoil within the university. Former lecturers have described a toxic work environment where dissent is discouraged, promotions are based on loyalty rather than merit, and students face inadequate living conditions and facilities despite paying high fees.
Students at Great Zimbabwe University have lamented the poor quality of food and dormitories, highlighting the registrar’s lack of concern for student welfare. The registrar’s focus on consolidating power has been criticized, with calls for her replacement by new leadership that prioritizes student needs and institutional development. Reports of inadequate healthcare services, lack of emergency transportation, and delayed repairs to essential facilities further underscore the mismanagement allegations against Dr. Sinikiwe.
The appointment process for key university positions, including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, has been marred by allegations of manipulation and favoritism, contravening established protocols and government regulations. Concerns have been raised about Dr. Sinikiwe’s leadership style, which has alienated faculty members and created a hostile work environment that is driving qualified professionals away from the institution.
Despite Dr. Gwatidzo’s impressive background and experience in various roles, including in labor relations and public relations, her current leadership approach has been criticized as power-hungry and detrimental to the university’s well-being. Calls for intervention from authorities to address the situation before it worsens and drives away more talented individuals continue to grow.
In conclusion, the allegations against Dr. Sinikiwe Gwatidzo paint a picture of a leader who prioritizes personal gain over the well-being of the institution and its stakeholders. The calls for accountability and reform within the university reflect a desire for transparency, integrity, and effective leadership that serves the best interests of the Great Zimbabwe University community.
