13 Zimbabweans tragically lost their lives in a horrific bus crash near Cape Town, South Africa. The accident, which also left 26 others injured, occurred when a coach belonging to Simplex Bus Company collided with a haulage truck on the N1 Highway near Hex River Pass. The bus was en route from Harare to Cape Town, with the accident happening approximately 130km before reaching its destination.
The driver of the bus tragically lost his life after attempting to jump out of the vehicle. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, transporting the survivors to Worcester Hospital for urgent medical care. Some of the injured passengers are in critical condition, fighting for their lives. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic crash.
Zimbabwe’s Consul General in Cape Town, Ms. Esther Mudambo, has assured that more details regarding the accident will be provided in due course. The injured individuals have been taken to Noodsentrum Hospital in the Western Cape for treatment. The area’s Provincial Minister of Mobility, Mr. Ricardo Mackenzie, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Zimbabwe Passengers Transport Organisation chairman, Dr. Samson Nhanhanga, expressed his sadness over the loss of lives in the crash, particularly of the breadwinners in many families. The organization has dispatched a team to South Africa to assist the authorities in providing medical aid to the injured passengers. They are also offering support to the bereaved families and ensuring that all necessary paperwork is completed.
Dr. Nhanhanga emphasized the importance of road safety and urged crew members to be responsible and adhere to traffic regulations at all times to prevent such tragedies from occurring. The association will continue to update the public on any developments related to the accident.
