The former Head of State recently visited Mr Gachagua’s home county of Nyeri for the first time since leaving power. His visit was to attend the burial of the late Assistant Inspector General of Police, King’ori Mwangi, at Ndugamano village in Tetu constituency on Saturday.

Before Mr Gachagua arrived for Mr King’ori’s burial, Mr Kenyatta left for Nyandarua to attend the burial of former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya’s wife – Lucy Kimunya. The former President was accompanied by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, former Gender Cabinet Secretary Rachel Shebesh, former Nyeri deputy governor Caroline Karuku, and former Nairobi governor Ann Kananu, among others.

During this visit, the former President was accompanied by a number of former government officials and politicians, signifying the importance of the occasion. He eulogized the late Mr Mwangi as a gallant officer who served the country diligently and also acknowledged the presence of other leaders who had joined him for the burial.

The DP, Mr Gachagua, also expressed his regret at not being able to meet the former President at the burial, citing a prior commitment at another funeral in Kirinyaga. However, he expressed his desire to greet Mr Kenyatta and reassure him of their respect, love, and ongoing prayers for him. Mr Gachagua emphasized the need for unity within the Mt Kenya region and promised to continue working towards uniting the leaders of the region, regardless of their political affiliations.

“I worked with Uhuru Kenyatta for 18 years as his confidant and defender. My obligation now is to unite this region. Our unity is our strength and we should not allow anyone to divide us as a community. If we allow ourselves to be divided, we will regret it,” the DP said.

Additionally, the DP acknowledged Mr Kenyatta’s influence as a former head of state and called for respect and unity within the Mt Kenya region, emphasizing the need to avoid division and promote strength through unity.

Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria also echoed the call for unity and collaboration among leaders, emphasizing the need for people to heal and work together to build the nation. Mr Kuria called on leaders to focus on transforming the country’s economy, irrespective of their political affiliations.

However, former Gender Cabinet Secretary Rachel Shebesh stated that she and her colleagues were content with serving in the opposition to offer oversight to the Kenya Kwanza government led by Dr. Ruto. She emphasized the importance of the opposition role in governance and expressed their willingness to play that role effectively.

In conclusion, the visit of the former President to Nyeri for the burial of the late Assistant Inspector General of Police King’ori Mwangi served as an opportunity for unity, reconciliation, and the promotion of respect and cooperation among leaders within the region. With the presence of several former government officials and politicians, as well as the expressions of unity and respect from the DP and other leaders, the occasion highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration for the betterment of the Mt Kenya region and the nation as a whole.
