In the capital of the Comoros, water scarcity has become a daily concern for its residents, affecting even essential services like hospitals. Behind this shortage is Sonede, the national company responsible for water supply, struggling with major infrastructure challenges. An aging pumping station in Vuvuni is at the heart of the problem, causing regular water cuts and forcing the population to resort to makeshift solutions, such as buying water from vendors.
This situation has prompted Sonede to consider emergency measures, such as installing tanks in the most affected neighborhoods, especially during critical periods like Ramadan and cholera outbreaks. But are these temporary solutions sufficient to meet such a fundamental and urgent need as access to clean water?
The absence of rivers in the capital and its surroundings further complicates the situation, making the population entirely dependent on the national distribution network, which is already failing. Residents are expressing growing frustration with this prolonged crisis, which not only affects their access to water but also to other essential resources like food.
Sonede announces new initiatives, such as the installation of water towers in Mkazi and Bahani, aimed at improving distribution in the north of Moroni and especially at El-Maarouf Hospital. These projects, while promising, are eagerly awaited by citizens who are tired of waiting for a reliable and sustainable solution.
The water crisis in the Comoros raises a fundamental question: how can access to water, a basic human right, be so precariously guaranteed in a national capital? The implementation of emergency solutions, while necessary, should not overshadow the importance of developing long-term structural responses to ensure that every citizen has access to clean and safe water. The responsibility lies with both local authorities and international organizations to support the Comoros in this vital struggle for the right to water.
