This is the report of a traffic accident that occurred on April 17, 2024 between Tongolo and Etoudi Presidential Palace.

Two men lost their lives tragically on Wednesday afternoon. The two men on a motorcycle ended up under the wheels of a truck. According to some witnesses, they were trying to escape from the control of the municipal police officers of Yaoundé 1st District. The tragedy took place on a one-way street, a few meters from the Yaoundé 1st District Hall.

Other testimonies reveal that the municipal police officers intercepted the occupants of the motorcycle. They asked them for a sum of 10,000 CFA francs. Not wanting to comply, they started the motorcycle to flee. The municipal officers allegedly lifted the back of the motorcycle. The occupants found themselves under the truck. The irreparable followed. The incident drew a crowd of motorcycle drivers angered by the death of their colleague. They blocked the street and the entrance to the town hall.

The Prefect of Mfoundi, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent, came to the scene to calm the situation. After being informed of the facts, the head of the department gave instructions regarding the deployment of municipal police. “We say again that public order must be maintained by the police and gendarmerie. Municipalities are responsible for good order, not for law enforcement. We should not live in a capital where incidents are provoked. This is an instruction I have given. No more checks outside of the gendarmerie and police.”

Traffic was gradually restored. The motorcycle drivers gathered at the entrance to the town hall were dispersed thanks to the intervention of security patrols.
