Mike Mayden, a former major-league baseball scout, has now taken on a new role as the Founder of A League of Our Own (ALOOO), the only Black-owned independent baseball league in the United States. He is extending an invitation to Black-owned businesses to explore sponsorship opportunities available for the upcoming season. In September 2024, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization will host 30 games in 30 days, and they are seeking support from a network of boosters, financial supporters, donors, sponsors, and underwriters to ensure the sustainability and growth of the league.

The league’s mission is to provide opportunities for inner-city baseball players who may have been denied the chance to play due to various factors. Since 1986, ALOOO has allowed players from various states and even countries such as Canada, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Hawaii to showcase their talent. Over 200 players from the program have gone on to play college or professional baseball, highlighting the impact of the league on developing young talent.

ALOOO aims to promote diversity in baseball, offer family entertainment, and serve as a platform for African American baseball players to continue competing. The fall league, which runs from the first week of September to the first week of October, will feature non-stop baseball action with 30 games in 30 days. Players from local, national, and international backgrounds, aged 18 and above, are welcome to participate, regardless of their high school or college eligibility status.

In addition to providing an avenue for players to compete and hone their skills, ALOOO will also introduce an entrepreneurship training program. This program will give participants insights into various fields like sports management, media production, umpiring, sports agency, and grounds crew maintenance training, preparing them for diverse career paths within the sports industry.

The league aims to honor African American baseball icons by naming teams after them to celebrate their contributions to the sport. Some of the distinguished figures include R Foster, Stachel Paige, Sam Allen, and Dick Allen, with considerations for adding more names in the future. The league remains open to suggestions for team names that pay tribute to former Negro League, Chicago Cubs, and MLB icons.

For those interested in sponsoring the league, donations can be made through the league’s website. Contributions of $1,000, $500, $250, $100, or more are welcome, with all donations eligible for a tax write-off. Additionally, players interested in trying out for a team can visit the website or contact the league directly at (205) 264-1468.

In conclusion, A League of Our Own (ALOOO) is not just a baseball league; it is a platform for empowerment, diversity, and community engagement within the sport. By providing opportunities for players to continue their baseball journey and offering valuable training programs, ALOOO is making a significant impact on the lives of young athletes and aspiring entrepreneurs in the African American community. Support from sponsors and players is crucial in ensuring the longevity and success of the league, and everyone is encouraged to be a part of this inspiring initiative.
