The island of Sal is hosting, on April 8 and 9, the international conference “Freedom, Democracy, and Good Governance: A look from Cape Verde”, in which politicians and experts from various continents participate. The event aims to promote discussion on the current challenges of contemporary politics and reaffirm Cape Verde’s commitment to the values under discussion before the world, as the central point of the Middle Atlantic.
At a time when “democracy and freedom have been under attack worldwide” and there is an exponential increase in populism, governments must reverse this situation. In this context, and as a way to contribute to this debate, the international conference “Freedom, Democracy, and Good Governance,” organized by the government of Cape Verde, is necessary according to Janine Lélis, Minister of State, National Defense, Territorial Cohesion, and Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs.
For about a day and a half, speakers, intellectuals, academics, politicians, and renowned experts from various parts of the world will gather to discuss these themes. The purpose of the conference, as the minister explains, is to address the challenges we are all experiencing from the perspective of Cape Verde and the need to combat these weaknesses on a global, varied, and integrated scale.
At the same time, the event reinforces Cape Verde’s commitment to these values before the world, as a platform for service provision in the Middle Atlantic. They want to show that everyone can always contribute and that everyone is responsible for promoting democracy.
The international conference “Freedom, Democracy, and Good Governance” aims to portray the experience, understanding, and different forms of implementation and construction of Democracy, as well as the experience of freedom, worldwide. The event includes guests from Africa, Europe, North and South America, and Asia, who will analyze various issues during the special session of speeches and the four panels of the conference.
The conference will culminate in the drafting of a declaration – the Sal Declaration – reflecting the principles discussed and the commitments made to promote these fundamental values. They see this conference as the beginning of other events, discussions, and reflections, aiming to contribute to this ongoing dialogue. The goal is to show the government’s interest and commitment to the proper functioning of institutions, improvement of democracy, and the rule of law. The conference is coordinated by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Office of the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs, with an estimated expenditure of up to 55,000 Contos.
