Valerie J. Lewis Coleman, a 60-year-old African American grandmother, former teacher, author, engineer, and retired educator, is hosting the When I See Me™ BIPOC Children’s Book Fair on Saturday, July 27th in Dayton, Ohio. This event is aimed at celebrating diversity in children’s literature and fostering a love for reading and writing among BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) children.
The book fair will take place at the West Branch Library, located at 300 Abbey Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45417, from 11am to 4pm. The event is free and open to the public, welcoming families, educators, and anyone passionate about diversity and representation in children’s books.
Valerie’s motivation for organizing this event stems from her desire to encourage her brown grandchildren to explore various career aspirations by providing examples of people who have achieved what they aspire to do and who look like them. Through her interactions with children in schools, organizations, and childcare facilities, she realized the lack of diverse representation in children’s books. This led her to create the When I See Me™ BIPOC Children’s Book Fair to spark curiosity, boost confidence, and enhance connection with the world around them.
The day’s activities will include author signings, engaging activities such as interactive storytelling sessions and creative writing workshops, and giveaways to ensure that every child leaves with a book. There will also be panel discussions for aspiring children’s book authors to gain insight and advice from experienced professionals in writing, publishing, and promoting diverse children’s literature.
Authors interested in participating can find registration details on the event website. Organizations and businesses looking to support this literacy initiative can request a sponsor packet by contacting [email protected] or calling 888-802-1802.
Valerie emphasizes the importance of representation in children’s literature and invites everyone to join the celebration on July 27th to inspire the next generation of storytellers. She is a passionate advocate for diversity in children’s literature and is committed to amplifying and celebrating BIPOC voices through events like the When I See Me™ BIPOC Children’s Book Fair.
