Irene Nerima, a 30-year-old patient, is currently facing end-stage kidney disease, where her kidneys are on the verge of losing their functionality permanently. The kidneys, vital bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, play a crucial role in purifying the blood by removing waste and excess water through urine. When they fail to function properly due to various infections, it leads to end-stage renal failure, also known as end-stage renal disease, which can progress to permanent damage.
To address her condition, Irene requires regular dialysis, but a kidney transplant offers the best chance for a return to full health. Currently, she undergoes dialysis sessions at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where each session costs Shs150,000, a subsidized rate compared to the Shs500,000 charged by private facilities. Despite having a family member willing to donate a kidney, Irene lacks the funds amounting to Shs80m needed to undergo the transplant procedure at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
The government recently announced the suspension of new kidney transplants at Mulago Hospital, following a successful index procedure conducted last December. This was done pending the establishment of an Organ Transplant Council to regulate such activities in accordance with the law. Irene started dialysis in November of the previous year at Mulago Hospital and is now in urgent need of a kidney transplant. She is seeking financial support from well-wishers to help her undergo the life-saving procedure and have a second chance at life.
Those interested in supporting Irene Nerima can do so by contacting her sister, Monica Nasirumbi Mugyenzi, at 0782936352, or her brother, Stephen Wandera Ouma, at 0777440252. Your contribution can make a significant difference in Irene’s journey towards receiving a kidney transplant and improving her quality of life. Let’s come together to help Irene Nerima in her battle against end-stage kidney disease and give her hope for a better and healthier future.
