The Republic of Sierra Leone is facing a concerning issue that questions the integrity of its law enforcement agencies. Instead of focusing on addressing issues such as the Kush epidemic, the police force has been accused of targeting victims rather than the root causes of the problems. There are rumors of high-ranking officials, including members of President Julius Maada Bio’s government, being involved in illicit activities related to the crisis. However, there has been a lack of action in response to these allegations, leading to doubts about the impartiality and independence of the law enforcement agencies.

The recent actions of the Sierra Leone Police Force have only added fuel to these concerns. The Inspector General of Police’s admission in Parliament that he would prefer not to have a career in law enforcement in his next life is troubling and raises questions about the integrity of the institution. With the Police Board being chaired by the Vice President, who is rumored to be involved in illicit activities, concerns about political interference in the law enforcement system are heightened.

Additionally, the way raids are conducted by the police force has come under scrutiny. Rather than discreetly investigating allegations, they prefer sensationalized press releases, blurring the lines between law enforcement and media spectacle. The recent raid on Admire Bio Jalloh’s premises, accompanied by a headline-grabbing “Breaking News” announcement, has raised doubts about the professionalism and impartiality of the police force.

Furthermore, inflammatory remarks made by the Vice President advocating for arrests and incarcerations without due process are concerning, as they violate fundamental human rights and undermine the principles of justice and fairness. To restore faith in the law enforcement institutions of Sierra Leone, swift action is necessary. The Vice President should step down from his role on the Police Board to ensure impartial oversight, and the Inspector General of Police should resign to pave the way for a leader untainted by political influence. President Julius Maada Bio must show a commitment to justice by holding all government officials accountable, regardless of their affiliations.

It is crucial for citizens to stand up against political manipulation and sensationalism that threaten the integrity of the nation’s justice system. Sierra Leone must reclaim its position as a beacon of justice and accountability in the region by upholding the rule of law without fear or favor. It is time for a renewed dedication to justice and transparency in Sierra Leone’s law enforcement institutions to ensure a more just and fair society for all.
