Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, expressed his excitement at the prospect of winning the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Award Ceremony. Davido’s track ‘Unavailable’ featuring Musa Keys has been nominated in this category, alongside four other songs. In an interview with Billboard at the Pre-Grammy show, Davido mentioned that he would celebrate wildly if he were to win the award, but also emphasized that he would be happy for any African artist who clinches the title.
He highlighted the significance of having a separate African category at the Grammy Awards, stating that it provides a platform for African artists to shine on a global stage. Davido’s ‘Unavailable’ will be competing against Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ and South Africa’s Tyla’s ‘Water’ for the Best African Music Performance category.
In addition to being nominated for Best African Music Performance, Davido has also been recognized in two other categories: ‘Timeless’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Feel’ for Best Global Music Performance. He will be going up against Burna Boy, Arooj Aftab, Silvana Estrada, Béla Fleck, Falu, and Gaurav Shah in the Best Global Music Performance category, and competing with Burna Boy, Susana Baca, Shakti, and Bokante in the Best Global Music Album category.
The Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony is set to take place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles tonight. Despite being thrilled at the prospect of winning, Davido remains humble and congratulatory towards his fellow African artists. He noted that having a separate category for African music at the Grammys is a cause for celebration in itself, and stressed the importance of unity and support within the African music industry.
