The family of the late police officer Walter Nyankieya Nyamato, who passed away in the United States, is still unaware of what led to his death. Nyamato was serving as an Inspector of Police, and he was part of an advance team consisting of nine other police officers who were conducting a reconnaissance mission ahead of a planned deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti. The sudden demise of Nyamato occurred a day after their arrival in Washington DC, and detectives from the Metropolitan Police have taken over the investigation.

The family is disturbed by the fact that the autopsy results and the body of the late police Inspector are not accessible to them. The deceased’s father, Philip Nyamato Obwaya, had informed his other son, who lives in Minnesota, to travel to Washington DC to view the body and obtain the autopsy results. However, he was told that this was not possible since it was a government-to-government arrangement. The family was later informed that updates regarding the death of their relative would be communicated through the Kenyan Embassy in Washington.

The anxiety and grief were visible when the Nation visited the family home in Nyatieko village, Keroka, Masaba North, Nyamira County. The officers at the hotel where Nyamato had stayed had to break into his room to find his lifeless body lying on the bed, and his father, Mr. Obwaya, attests to his son having no known medical conditions prior to his sudden passing.

Nyamato and the nine officers were scheduled to proceed to Haiti following their time in Washington DC. The deceased acted as the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Inspector of Police, Noor Gabow and it was revealed that this was his third time traveling to Haiti.

Meanwhile, there was conflicting information regarding the purpose of their trip. The family maintains that it was a reconnaissance mission while Mr. Gabow, on the other hand, claimed that the 10 officers were in the United States for a seminar. The government’s plan to deploy 1,000 Kenyan police officers to Haiti was blocked by the High Court in Nairobi due to constitutional issues, but President William Ruto was determined to push ahead with the deployment. The international force was intended to address the escalating gang violence in Haiti, which led to thousands of deaths each year.

It is reported that the President expected to receive a formal request from Haiti to resume planning and prevent further delays to the mission. On Wednesday, government officials visited the family to confirm the death of their son and express their condolences. The AP Commander who led the officials, as well as the father of the deceased, provided insights into Nyamato’s commitment to his duties, both domestically and internationally.

Nyamato’s sudden death has left his family and the villagers deeply saddened, and they remember him as a dedicated community member who always supported local initiatives. His father emphasized that Nyamato was in good health and even spoke to his family on the phone hours before boarding the flight to Washington. The circumstances surrounding his passing remain shrouded in mystery, and the family is eagerly awaiting further information to understand what led to Nyamato’s untimely death.
