The annual report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World by the European Parliament has come under scrutiny due to the omitted reference to Western Sahara. Pressure from Moroccan ambassadors led to the removal of any mention of the region in the report, silencing the ongoing human rights violations in the area.

A proposed amendment by MEPs Miguel Urbán and Manu Pineda, advocating for highlighting the human rights situation in illegally occupied territories, including Western Sahara, was rejected following Moroccan intervention. The Socialist Group, led by Spanish MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor, collaborated with Moroccan diplomats to ensure that Western Sahara was excluded from the report.

The Socialists’ strategy involved splitting the amendment into two parts for separate votes. The first vote focused on removing references to Palestine and Western Sahara, while the second addressed each territory individually. By fragmenting the amendment, the Socialist Group successfully eliminated any mention of Western Sahara from the report.

The decision to omit Western Sahara from the report undermines human rights advocacy efforts in the region. It suppresses the voices of the Saharawi people living under Moroccan occupation, depriving them of international support for their rights. This move, driven by Moroccan pressure, hinders the global community’s ability to advocate for the rights of the Sahrawi people effectively.

It is essential to condemn Morocco’s interference in the European Parliament’s report and call for the reconsideration of including Western Sahara in discussions on Human Rights and Democracy in the World. The international community must unite to uphold the rights of the Sahrawi people and ensure that their struggles are acknowledged and addressed on a global platform.
