Leaders and locals in the West Nile sub-region are grieving the untimely passing of Zombo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lt Col (rtd) Pius Alitema, who left this world on March 8. His sudden demise came as a shock to many, as he had attended a burial in Maracha District on March 7 and did not show any signs of illness.

Tragically, Alitema passed away on his way to Arua Regional Referral Hospital in Kango sub-county, where he was being referred for further management of low blood pressure. The news of his death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.

The Zombo District chairperson, Mr. James Oyulu, fondly remembered Alitema as a dedicated worker who was passionate about his duties and will be deeply missed. He praised Alitema for his role in maintaining peace and security in the district during times of crisis and for his efforts in building peace among various stakeholders.

Mr. Emmy Kizito Kakura, the former Zombo District Chairperson, lauded Alitema as a highly professional UPDF officer who combined faith and intelligence in his work. He highlighted Alitema’s approachability and his ability to unite people, emphasizing his crucial role in handling security matters in Zombo.

Mr. Omito Robert Steen, the Pakwach District chairperson, remembered Alitema as a truth-teller and a skilled mobilizer with a distinguished background in the UPDF. He expressed gratitude for Alitema’s contributions and acknowledged his commitment to fairness and justice.

Reflecting on Alitema’s career, the Principal Human Resource Officer at the Office of the President, Mr. Herbert Atuhaire, revealed that Alitema had served for 30 years with the Internal Security Organization (ISO) before taking on the role of RDC. The Office of the President will oversee the burial arrangements in honor of Alitema’s service.

Dr. Mark Bonny Bramali, the Zombo District Health Officer, who had been treating Alitema, disclosed that the deceased had been struggling with complications of low blood sugar. Despite being diagnosed with diabetes, his condition was under control until a recent episode where skipping his medication on an empty stomach led to a severe drop in his sugar levels.

Efforts were made to stabilize him at Nyapea Hospital before being transferred to Arua, but sadly, Alitema succumbed to his condition on the way. His passing has left a void in the community, but his legacy of service and dedication will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
