Inter Miami is currently relying heavily on their Argentine star Lionel Messi, according to coach Gerardo Martino. The team has had a strong start to the season, remaining unbeaten in their first two games, including a win over Real Salt Lake and a draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, with a busy schedule ahead for Messi, Martino believes it is crucial to reduce the superstar’s workload.
As the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner prepares for upcoming matches with both his club and national team, Martino emphasized the importance of managing Messi’s energy levels. Despite Messi’s crucial stoppage-time goal against the Galaxy, Martino expressed concern about the toll it took on the veteran player.
Martino shared, “I feel that in these last two matches, he has expended too much energy, and that is also my responsibility to make sure the team operates in a way that we can use him in the best way.” The coach highlighted the need to provide Messi with more opportunities closer to goal, where he can be most effective.
In order to relieve some of the pressure on Messi, Martino is looking to ensure the team can support him in creating and finishing plays. Reflecting on previous successful performances from Messi, particularly in the Leagues Cup game against Orlando, Martino emphasized the importance of providing Messi with the right service in the attacking third of the field.
The addition of midfielder Federico Redondo, another Argentine talent, is expected to provide the team with additional support and creativity in the midfield. Miami is hopeful that Redondo’s paperwork will be resolved in time for him to make his debut in the upcoming match against Orlando City.
Overall, Martino recognizes the need to strike a balance in utilizing Messi’s talents effectively while also preventing burnout. By strategically managing Messi’s workload and providing him with the necessary support, Inter Miami aims to continue their strong start to the season and maximize the talent of their Argentine superstar.
