The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived in Tunis on Wednesday for an official visit leading a delegation including her Ministers of Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, Higher Education and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edmondo Cirielli.

Three agreements were signed between Tunisia and Italy during the visit of the Prime Minister, as revealed by the Tunisian Presidential Palace. These agreements include support for the Tunisian state budget, financial cooperation between the Central Bank of Tunisia and the Italian Society of Deposits and Credits for SME financing, and a cooperation protocol in higher education and research between the Tunisian and Italian Ministries of Higher Education and Research.

Following a meeting at the Carthage Palace in the northern suburb of Tunis with the President of Tunisia, Kaïs Saïed, the Italian Prime Minister expressed her “gratitude” to the Tunisians for their collaboration in combating human traffickers.

“It is vital, today for our two countries, to unite our efforts and stand together to fight against slave traders, mafia networks that exploit the legitimate dreams of those seeking to improve their living conditions.” According to Ms. Meloni, “the ties between Italy and Tunisia are based on a new vision of equality and mutual interest.”

“Tunisia should not be a destination for migrants from the rest of Africa. We have a responsibility to strengthen cooperation in this regard and international organizations should be more involved, especially in terms of repatriation.”
