Cognito Therapeutics, a medical device company based in Cambridge, Mass., has secured a new round of funding, raising $35 million in its Series B extension. This brings the total funds raised by the company to $128 million, which will be used to further develop its alternative treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

The company’s treatment involves the use of a headset that provides gamma frequency light and sound stimulation to combat the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s. Patients undergoing treatment are required to use the device for one hour per day in their homes. The light and sound stimulation aims to stimulate brain activity that is disrupted by neurodegenerative conditions, potentially helping to preserve brain structure.

Cognito is currently undertaking a large study of the treatment, and CEO Brent Vaughan has stated that he expects the company to complete the trial and submit data to the Food and Drug Administration for review by the end of 2025.

The funding comes at a time when a new wave of approved drugs for Alzheimer’s disease are reaching patients, highlighting the increasing focus on finding effective treatments for this neurodegenerative disease.

The company’s innovative approach to using light and sound stimulation for the treatment of Alzheimer’s represents a promising development in this field. With the support of the newly secured funding, Cognito Therapeutics is well-positioned to advance its research and development efforts, bringing its alternative treatment one step closer to potentially improving the lives of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
