The first over-the-counter birth control pill is set to debut in U.S. stores later this month, marking a significant milestone for women’s reproductive health. Manufactured by Perrigo, the medication, called Opill, will offer American women and teens the convenience of purchasing contraceptive medication without a prescription. With a suggested retail price of $20 for a one-month supply and $50 for a three-month supply, Opill will also be available for purchase online.

Opill is classified as an older type of contraceptive known as minipills, which contain a single synthetic hormone called progestin. These pills are generally associated with fewer side effects compared to the more popular combination estrogen and progestin pills. The arrival of Opill provides women in the U.S. with an additional birth control option amidst the ongoing legal and political battles surrounding reproductive health, including the recent reversal of Roe v. Wade, which has significantly impacted abortion access nationwide.

It is important to note that Opill’s approval for over-the-counter sales is unrelated to the contentious court battles over the abortion pill mifepristone. Anti-abortion groups have made it clear that they do not oppose the use of contraceptives to prevent pregnancies. Notably, birth control pills are readily available without a prescription in many regions of South America, Asia, and Africa.

Despite concerns raised by FDA scientists regarding the company’s data, including issues related to the drug’s use by women with certain medical conditions, Opill received approval for over-the-counter distribution. Dr. Verda Hicks, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, emphasized that studies have demonstrated the ability of patients, including adolescents, to effectively screen themselves for the safe use of the pills.

The introduction of Opill represents a significant advancement in women’s healthcare in the United States. It not only provides greater accessibility to a commonly used form of birth control but also showcases the importance of empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. As Opill becomes available on store shelves and online platforms, it stands as a symbol of progress towards ensuring comprehensive and inclusive healthcare options for all individuals.
